LOS ANGELES (AP) – Jay Z plans to tell the story of the 2012 shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Variety reports Jay Z and the Weinstein Company have won a bidding war to turn two books about Martin’s death into a six-part documentary series and a feature film.
Martin, the unarmed black teenager who was shot dead in 2012 near his home by a neighborhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman. Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in 2013. The outcome of the case set off a protest around the United States in support of Martin.
The books are “Suspicion Nation” by Lisa Bloom, an NBC reporter who covered the trial of Zimmerman, and “Rest in Power,” by Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin.
